Biography

Fred Theobald was eliminated in the third round of the light-heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestling event at the 1976 Montréal Summer Olympics. This bad result led to a dispute with the then national chief coach, Heinz Ostermann, and Theobald immediately retired from the national team.

Internationally, Theobald won bronze medals at the 1975 World Championships and 1976 Europeans. In 1974, 1975 and 1978 he won the West German national title. By profession, Theobald was a trained swimming pool attendant and worked with the municipality of his hometown Pirmasens.
