Biography

József Palotás got acquainted with wrestling in the Levente (Youth pre-military) movement, and from 1929 to 1939 he was a wrestler at the BVSC. He won three individual national championship titles, the first in 1934 as a heavyweight in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, and then in 1937 in the half-heavyweight in Greco-Roman. In 1934 and 1935 he was also a member of the BVSC wrestling team that won the national championship.

Between 1934 and 1937 he appeared ten times in the Hungarian national team where he competed in both disciplines. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics he won his first three bouts in Greco-Roman in the middleweight category and finished third. In 1937 at the European Championships in München he won the bronze medal in freestyle. He retired from active sports in 1939.

During his sports career, he already worked for the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), and after the Second World War he obtained a law degree. After completing it he first worked as a legal adviser at the MÁV and then as a ministerial supervisor.
