Biography

Cai Wenhua, originally from Fujian province, moved to the Philippines with his parents as a child, where he became the most important player of the overseas Chinese “Qunsheng” basketball team. During a successful tour of the team through China in 1946, Cai Wenhua was engaged by the “Ta Kung Pao” newspaper to play for their Dagong Basketball Team in Shanghai. He represented the Republic of China at the 1948 London Olympics before he went to Taiwan with his family. At the 1954 Asian Games in Manila, Cai Wenhua won a silver medal with Chinese Taipei’s team and placed fifth at the 1954 World Basketball Championships.

After retiring as a competitive player, Cai served as a coach and led the Chinese Taipei team to fourth place at the 1959 World Championships, the best position ever achieved in the team’s history. Later Cai Wenhua had an influential position in the Taiwan Railway Administration. He died of heart disease at the age of 56.
