Biography

Joaquim Vieira was a Portuguese wrestler who won 14 national titles in Greco-Roman wrestling, four national freestyle titles, and eight national team titles. Vieira began as an amateur wrestler at Sociedade Ordem e Progresso in 1964/65, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal in 1966. He competed in Greco-Roman at the 1976 Montréal Olympics as a featherweight but was eliminated after two straight defeats. In the same year he also competed at the European Championships.

In 1968 Vieira became a coach which included a brief spell working at Benfica in 1980/81. For his contribution to the sport he received multiple accolades from the Portuguese Olympic Committee and the Portuguese Federation of Amateur Wrestling. In 1983 Vieira was awarded with the Stromp Prize in the Amateur Athlete category.
