Zarbeg Beriashvili

Zarbeg Beriashvili had four matches at the 1964 Olympic freestyle wrestling tournament, three won against athletes from Pakistan, India, and Enyu Valchev of Bulgaria, the eventual gold medalist, losing only to Turkey’s Mahmut Atalay in the bronze medal match. At the 1968 Olympics, he won three matches against athletes from Japan, Romania, and Mongolia, and drew matches against American Wayne Wells and again against Valchev.

Beriashvili was the 1969 World Champion, adding silver medals at the Worlds in 1963 and 1967, and a bronze in 1965. He was European Champion three times, winning in 1966, 1967, and 1970, and won six Soviet titles before retiring from competition in 1972.
