LLieutenant Jim Flynn was stationed with the Curragh Command at Curragh Camp when he was one of 12 servicemen that were selected to compete on the Irish basketball team at the 1948 Olympics. Unfortunately for Flynn and the Irish team, they suffered four heavy defeats in their opening pool, scoring just 70 points and conceding 281. Their record was the worst of the 23 competing countries, and they were placed last after two classification matches. Through 2024 it remains the only time Ireland sent a basketball team to the Olympics. Fynn retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel and lived in Cork during his retirement years.
