Biography

American-born Steve Calder competed for the United States in Soling Class sailing during late 1970s and the early 1980s. He was selected, along with the non-Olympians Ed Baird and Peter Branning, to travel to the 1980 Summer Olympics, but stayed home when his country decided to boycott the Games. In 1981 he partnered with Hans Fogh and John Kerr and won the Canadian Championships, an accomplishment that the trio repeated in 1983 and 1984. After winning the 1983 European Championships and the 1984 North American Championships, they were sent to that year’s Summer Olympics, where they won bronze after holding on to various podium spots from the third race on. Non-Olympian Rob Muru replaced Kerr in 1985 and the trio continued their success, capturing the United States and North American Championships that year. They were fourth at the 1986 World Championships prior to Muru being replaced by Hank Lammens, and then finished third at the 1987 European Championships and second at that year’s Pan American Games. Calder missed the 1988 Summer Olympics, but continued to compete for several years thereafter, and his later achievements include a victory at the United States Championships in 1990.
