Biography

Giovanni Gavagnin was one the best Italian basketball players in the 1960s. In 225 matches in the Italian League with Pallacanestro Varese, Fides Partenope Napoli and Juvecaserta, Gavagnin scored 2,932 points before retiring at the end of the 1975/76 season. With Varese, he won two Italian titles (1961 and 1964) and two Intercontinental Cups (1966 and 1970). With Napoli he won the Italian Cup in 1968 and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. After his retirement, he coached several clubs including Varese, Napoli and Juvecaserta, all teams he had played for.

Gavagnin made his international début against Israel at the 1959 European Championship in Istanbul. He played in two Olympics (1960 and 1964) and in the 1963 World Championship in Brazil. In total he won 59 caps and scored 394 points. Gavagnin was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
