Biography

Joseph Compton was one of the six crew members aboard Saskia in the 8-metre event at the 1936 Olympics. After showing early promise, finishing fourth in races one and two, they never managed such a highly placed finish in the remaining races and finished sixth overall. Compton worked in India for the railway board, helping to standardise the country’s rail system. He was honoured with the OBE in the New Year’s Honours List in 1948 for his work abroad.
