Biography

Due to the interruption of World War II, Maurice Girardot’s tenure with the French national basketball team was relatively short. The most notable of his 13 appearances came at the 1946 and 1947 European Championships, where France finished fourth and fifth respectively, and the 1948 London Olympics, where the team won a silver medal. Following his retirement, he turned to coaching, leading the Club sportif Château-Thierry’s women’s team to three national titles between 1949 and 1953. He later founded the Basket club de Maurepas in 1973 and worked as a physical education teacher and coach, as well as a technical advisor for the Fédération sportive de France. At the time of his death in February 2020, at the age of 98, he was the last surviving member of his silver medal-winning Olympic squad.
