Biography

In 1912, Halfdan Hansen was a member of the crew of Alfred Larsen’s Magda IX, winning gold at the Stockholm Olympics, coming from behind, however, in both races. He represented the Kongelig Norsk Seilforening but became later also a member of the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS).

He worked in the insurance business and became managing director of the Oslo branch of the insurance company “Hansa”. In 1910, he married Marie Falkum. They remained childless.

Halfdan Hansen froze to death while skiing around Easter of 1953, caught by a blizzard. For him it was an annual undertaking, to walk with company from Gotli to Sota in Skjåkfjella. Years ago he was instrumental in building a cabin named Skridulaupbu half way between these places. His body and that of hotel owner Arne Boman Hansen (born 1895) were found on 2 April 1953, about four kilometers away from the cabin, but they are assumed to have died one day earlier.
