Biography

Stan Leibel was very active in yacht racing during the 1960s and 1970s and represented Canada in numerous international tournaments, including the 1967 5.5 Metre World Championships and the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In the latter, he placed sixth in the 5.5 metres class alongside Ernest Weiss and Jack Hasen. He had also been in the running to represent Canada in this class at the 1964 Tokyo Games, but ultimately lost the trials to Sandy MacDonald. He later competed in the Star class World Championships in 1971, where he was 42nd out of 49 entrants, with the non-Olympian Tony Lorch.

By career, Leibel was a real estate developer in Toronto and served as president of his own firm. The business eventually passed to his son, Lorne, who represented Canada in the Tempest Class at the 1976 Montreal Games alongside Stan’s nephew Allan. Allan had also competed in the Dragon class at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Another of Stan’s children, daughter Terry, was a member of the Canadian national equestrian team and won a silver medal in team jumping at the 1979 Pan American Games. She was also a journalist who covered several editions of the Olympics for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Stanley owned a number of horses ridden by the national team, including ones ridden by 10-time Olympian Ian Millar.
