Ede Komáromi started his career as a footballer before ending up on the basketball court. Komáromi played for Szeged Postás (from 1944 to 1947), then for several teams in Budapest, such as TF, FTC and Újpesti Dózsa. His first international success was the bronze medal he won at the 1949 World College Championship, before being selected for the senior team, playing 15 times for the national team. In 1952 he participated at the Helsinki Olympics, where the Hungarian team finished 13th. One year later he finished second at the European Championships in Moskva.
As with his playing career, Komáromi was successful as a coach, with him working for nine clubs. He won the Hungarian championship with the Budapesti Vörös Meteor women’s team and the Hungarian Cup with the MAFC men’s team. His greatest adventure came between 1959 and 1961, when he laid the foundations of the sport in the Republic of Guinea. Later he served as the head coach of the Hungarian youth national team and then the adult national team. A basketball memorial tournament is held every year in his memory.
