Biography

Austrian middle-distance runner Ferdinand Friebe won 17 Austrian titles in 800 metres (1919-1923), 1,500 metres (1913, 1919-1924, and 1926-1929), and 3×1,000 metres relay (1922). At the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, he was eliminated in the 1,500 metres relay and did not start the 800 metres. He qualified for the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 3,000 metres steeplechase but did not start for unknown reasons.

Friebe fought in World War I and, with his brother Johann, founded a business installing electrical operating systems with the connection of high-voltage systems. During World War II he fought at the Lorient Submarine Base and became an American prisoner-of-war until 1946.

Personal Best: 1500 – 4:06.3 (1922).
