Eddie Cudworth

Eddie Cudworth was a prominent Canadian marathoner from Toronto during the 1930s who had gotten his start at Central Tech High School in the late 1920s and quickly burst into the local amateur running scene. By 1931 he was competing in larger races in Canada and the United States, including a 9th place finish in the 1932 Boston Marathon, but was still receiving little attention from the public overall. It was therefore claimed at the time that he “came out of nowhere” to win the 1932 Canadian Marathon Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba, defeating reigning champion Percy Wyer, who had competed for Canada at the 1928 Summer Olympics and would do so again in 1936. Cudworth’s victory qualified him to help represent Canada at the 1932 edition of the Summer Games, where he placed 18th in a field of 28 competitors in the marathon. He competed in the Boston Marathon again in 1933, but his career began to slow down after this and effectively ended upon his marriage to sprinter Isabella Evans in 1936. Outside of athletics he worked as a baker for his entire life and rarely spoke of his running career.
