Santiago Manguán was an athlete, councillor and a writer. Born in Caleruega in 1941, Manguán started off as a cyclist before moving to athletics. He became a champion at the club and national level in the marathon, before setting a national record in the event in 1976. In the same year, he was selected to represent Spain at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Following his athletics career, Manguán became a councillor at Aranda city council, and later a town crier. As an author, he wrote several books of poetry. Manguán was also an athletics coach and a judge, and was the manager of the Villa de Aranda handball team. Many of his sporting trophies were held in the Santiago Manguán Museum, a hall within the local town hall in Caleruega.
