Biography

Lauri Halonen was a Finnish long-distance runner who represented HKV in Helsinki. At the national championships Halonen won gold in the 25,000 metres in 1917 and silver in the same event in 1924. Later the same year he ran in the marathon at the 1924 Paris Olympics. At the 27km mark of the race he was in a pack of three athletes chasing the race leader, and eventual winner, Albin Stenroos. Italy’s Romeo Bertini and the American Clarence DeMar finished second and third, respectively, however, with Halonen just missing out on an Olympic medal with fourth place.
