Biography

Martti Marttelin was a Finnish track and field athlete who specialised in long-distance running. Marttelin ran in the marathon at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where he won the bronze medal. Two years later he set a world record in the 25,000 metres, which stood until 1939. Marttelin fought for the Finnish Army in the Winter War where he was killed in action in March 1940.
