Biography

Morville Chote demonstrated a talent for athletics as a school boy and was selected as captain of the Luton Modern School’s athletic team prior to World War II. He studied modern languages at Oxford and then joined the British Army in 1943, with whom he served until 1964.

During that time he was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 1948 Summer Olympics, where he came in 19th in the qualifying round of the javelin throw and did not advance. This was his only major international tournament and, following his military career, he took up a position with the Canada Life insurance company until his retirement.

His son, Robert, is an economist who was awarded a knighthood in 2021 “for services to fiscal policy and the economy” and his daughter-in-law, Dame Sharon White, was head of OFCOM, the regulatory body for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom.
