Biography

James Ginty placed second to George Bailey of Salford, in the AAA steeplechase in 1935, and to Manchester’s Tom Evenson in 1936 which guaranteed Evenson and Ginty’s selection onto the 1936 GB Olympic squad. Sadly, both Britons failed to progress beyond their opening heats. An NCO, Ginty was a lance-corporal, later lance-sergeant, in the Coldstream Guards, and, in 1935, won the Inter-Services cross-country title, came third in the Army Championship at Aldershot, and was second in the Southern two miles steeplechase. He enjoyed a particularly successful cross-country season in 1937, winning the Army title, which ended a run of four consecutive titles for Robert Sutherland , and also finishing third in both the National and the International race in Brussels, in which he was the first Englishman home. A member of Belgrave Harriers, he represented Middlesex in Inter-Country Cross-country Championship.

Personal Best: 3000S – 9:56.6 (1936).
