Biography

It was unfortunate for Stan Jones that he was in his prime at the time when Jack Holden and Tom Richards dominated British Marathon running. Jones finished second in the 1946 Polytechnic Marathon and fourth in that year’s AAAs. The nearest he came to a AAA title was in 1948 when he finished third behind Holden and Richards in the race from Windsor to Chiswick. Jones narrowly held on to third place by just 1 sec after tiring during the final two laps around the stadium. At the 1948 London Olympics he was last of the 30 finishers from 41 starters. Jones, a stockbroker, was still running marathons, and other long distance races, in his mid-40s.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-40:49 (1948).
