Biography

Jürgen Busch earned two East German Championships in the marathon in 1967 and 1972 and one over 10,000 metres in 1969. In 1968 he was the first German to run the marathon under 2-15 and also under 2-14. He then finfished 15th in the Olympic marathon at Mexico-City. He competed in the European Championships 1969 (fourth) and 1971 (retired).

He then fell into disgrace with the political leadership of East Germany, and was no longer considered for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Among other things, he had forgotten to specify an uncle from the West in his personal file. Therefore he retired in 1973. The educated welder was a staff sergeant in the Nationale Volksarmee (National People’s Army) of the GDR.
