Biography

Of Scottish ancestry, Billy Henderson played for Granville Waratah as a junior footballer. His senior career as a goalkeeper began in 1948 with Granville FC Magpies, a team with whom he would remain through 1956. Only near the end of his career, from 1957 through 1960, did he switch to Auburn. Internationally, he made his début with the Australian national team in 1953 in a match against the South China XI. In doing so, he became the first second-generation Australian national squad player, as his father Andy had made two appearances in 1924. Billy earned six caps between 1953 and 1956 but, although he was selected for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, he did not play in either of Australia’s matches.
