Biography

Anni Steuer won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 80 hurdles after the photo finish was evaluated, as four runners came in with the same time 11.7. Ondina Valla from Italy was finally determined to be the gold medalist, Steuer took silver, Canadian Betty Taylor was awarded the bronze medal, and Italian Claudia Testoni was left with an unfortunate fourth place. Anni Steuer, one of the world’s best hurdlers in the 1930s, was born in Alsace (Metz), at that time German territory, but lived in Duisburg. She was German Champion in 1935, and runner-up in the two following years.
