Konstantin Krause

Long jumper Konstantin Krause was eliminated in the qualifying round at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, as he was at the 1993, 1995 and 1999 World Championships and the 1998 Europeans. He was more successful at the European Cup, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1993 and 1997, and fifth in 1999. At the World Indoors he failed to qualify in 1995 and 1997, but won a silver medal in the 1992 European Indoors.

In 1985 Krause won the East German Youth Championship but he was not allowed to participate in the 1986 World Youth Championships because his family had “Western contacts.” As he refused to cooperate with the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit), his sport career ended abruptly and he started his university education as a construction engineer. In 1989 he fled across the open Hungarian border to West Germany and moved to Wattenscheid, where he continued his active career. He then became German Champion in 1998-99, also winning indoors in 1995-97 and 1999-2001. He later went back to his hometown of Erfurt and became a teacher at a private school for hotel management.
