Biography

Middle- and long-distance runner Uwe Mönkemeyer won a bronze medal at the 1983 European Indoors in the 3,000 and placed fourth in 1984 for his best international results. In 1986, he also came in fourth in the 1,500, and one year later was eliminated in the heats, but he finished 10th in the 3,000 metres at the World Indoors. In his only Olympic competition Mönkemeyer did not finish the 5K semifinal at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Domestically, he won two West German championships in 1986 and 1987 in the 1,500 metres, and also won four cross-country titless (1981-84, and 1988). Indoors he added six more national titles.
