Biography

Evangelos Gerakakis was born in Khalkida on the island of Euboia. He came to Athens at age 20, working as a baker. A muscular and athletic man, he had earlier won prizes in weightlifting. Competing in the first ever marathon, as part of the Pan Hellenic Sports Celebration, Gerakakis placed 6th in that race, earning a spot in the Olympic team. In the Olympic race, Gerakakis placed 7th, although his finishing time is unknown. The company that Gerakakis founded together with his partner Konstantinos Tsitas - located next to the National Library - became a rather well-known patisserie in Athens. Gerakakis only lived to see part of that success, dying in 1913.

Personal Best: Mar – 3-37:07 (1896).
