Biography

The first edition of the Panhellenic Games was held in March 1896 where Ioannis Persakis won gold in the triple jump with 12.44 metres. These Games were used as qualification for the first edition of the modern Olympics, held in Athína the following month. At the 1896 Athína Games Persakis won bronze in the triple jump with 12.52 metres. The triple jump was the first event to award medals at the modern Olympic Games, with Persakis becoming the first Greek athlete to win a medal.
