Jolán Kleiber-Kontsek

Jolán Kontsek started her sports career with swimming at the age of eight, and switched to athletics at the age of 13. From 1955-75, she was a member of Budapesti Dózsa (later Újpesti Dózsa). Between 1960-72, she won the Hungarian discus championship 11 times, and in 1960 and 1961 also won the shot put. She improved the national record in the discus throw 15 times, and was the first Hungarian female discus thrower to throw over 50 (in 1960) and 60 (in 1971) metres.

Kontsek was a member of the Hungarian national team from 1960-75. At the 1961 Universiade, she placed third in the discus and sixth in the shot put, winning the discus gold medal at the 1965 Universiade, while at the 1963 Universiade Kontsek finished second in the discus, third in the shot put, and fourth in the javelin throw. At the 1962 European Championships in Beograd, she won a bronze medal in discus, placing fourth in that event in 1965. In her two Olympic appearances, she won a bronze medal in 1968 and was sixth in 1964.

In 1965 Kontsek was chosen as the Hungarian female athlete of the year. In 1967, she obtained a teaching degree from the College of Physical Education, and in 1974, a professional trainer’s certificate. From 1970, she was a physical education teacher, and from 1975 she also worked as a coach for Újpest Dózsa (UTE).
