Biography

András Baronyi set the first official 100 metres breaststroke world record in 1907. Unfortunately for Baronyi, there was only a 200 metre race at the 1908 London Olympics, and he failed to qualify for the final. However, four years later, at the Stockholm Games, he competed in the 100 metre backstroke and finished fourth. He also competed in the standing long jump in the track and field events. Baronyi was the national 200 yard breaststroke champion in 1908, and the 150 yard backstroke champion in 1911 and 1912.

After completing his legal studies, Baronyi became an engineering officer. Between the two World Wars, he was president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation. He died in 1944 after a long illness.

Personal Bests: 100m breaststroke – 1:24 (1907), 220y breaststroke – 2:41:8 (1908), 100 backstroke – 1:18:8 (1911), SLJ – 3.15 (1910).
