Biography

József Csík’s love of sports was already evident in his childhood. Proof of his good throwing ability was shown when he threw a snowball over the church tower in his hometown playing with other kids. Later, at the suggestion of his physical education teacher, he started playing handball, and at the age of 15 he became the national Spartakiad champion in grenade throwing, where he threw the grenade 79 meters.

He met the javelin for the first time in 1960 at a high school competition, where on his first attempt he threw a school record with it. As an athlete he competed for Bp-i Petőfi, TFSE and Építók. He became the Hungarian champion in 1970 and 1972. He was a member of the national team between 1968 and 1976. In 1970 he won a silver medal at the World College Championship (Universiade) in Italy.

In 1971 he finished 10th at the European Championship in Helsinki and first at the European Cup, and in 1972 he made it to the Olympics in München where he finished 12th. After his successful sports career he worked as a coach and taught students to love sports and exercise as a physical education teacher at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.
