Biography

Wilfred Reginald Hildreth was a track and field athlete who was an outstanding sprinter, holding the Indian 200 meters record for two decades. Hildreth represented India at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he ran in both the 200 metres but did not advance from the heats. There is conflicting information about his participation in the 200 metres in Paris, with the Official Report listing him as a non-starter while a French newspaper mentions that he injured himself during the race. There is also conflicting information about Hildreth in the 100 metres. Until recently (2024) he was listed as a starter in the 100, but evidence found in 1924 French sporting newspapers indicates he did compete. Hildreth was also scheduled to run in the 400 metres, 400 metres hurdles, and the two relay races at the Paris Games, but did not start in any of those. His son Peter was a champion hurdler who competed at three Olympic Games from 1952 to 1960.

Personal Bests: 100y – 10.2 (1916); 200 – unknown.
