Biography

Ali Baghbanbashi got his start in athletics as a soldier in Iran’s army after World War II. His first major international podium finishes came at the 1951 Asian Games, where he won the 5000 metres event and was runner-up in the 3000 metres steeplechase. His next stop was the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but he was eliminated in the opening round of both of his showcase events. He switched to the marathon for the 1956 edition, but did not complete the race. At the 1958 Asian Games, he took bronze in both the 5000 and 10,000 metre events. Although he continued to race into his 50s, he never again reached the podium at a major international tournament.

Personal Bests: 5000 – 14:27.2 (1958); Mar – 2-38:12 (1956); 3000S – 9:06.0 (1958).
