Biography

Gerry Coughlan joined the Irish Army in June 1922 at Beggars Bush Barracks, Dublin. He was the first Irish Army representative to win a national athletic championship when he won the 880 yards in 1925 and won the mile title in 1927 and 1928. He won 12 titles at the Irish Army athletics championships ranging from 220 yards to cross-country. Having retired from the army in 1929 he emigrated to the United States in the 1930s settling in Florida. He established a world record of 160½ pounds for a tarpon caught on a light tackle at Miami Beach in 1950.
