Biography

Born in Sicily, Margherita Gargano ran middle and longer distances. She competed in the 1,500 at the 1976 Montréal Olympics but the highlight of her career was probably her gold medal in the 1,500 at the 1975 Mediterranean Games. She also placed sixth at the 1982 European Championships in the 1,500. Gargano won Italian titles in the 3,000 metres in 1973, 1976, and 1979-80. She earned 45 international caps. Gargano later turned to running 10K when it was an unusual distance for women.

Personal Best: 1500 – 4:06.71 (1979).
