Biography

Aurelio Genghini was born in the Emilia-Romagna region but moved with his family to Roma at a young age. He began to run long distances and also found work as a conductor in the tramway company of the capital city. He débuted in 1930 at 23 with an eighth-place finish at the Giro di Roma. In 1932 he was runner-up behind Michele Fanelli at the Torino marathon on 16 October (2-45:55) and one year later at Roma he set the national record for 15 miles with a time of 1-07:25. He won his first marathon title at Torino on 15 October 1933 with his personal best of 2-38:40.

In Torino on 9 September 1934, Genghini won the marathon bronze medal (2-55:03) at the inaugural edition of the European Championships. Two years later at the Berlin Olympics he failed to finish but he won his second Italian title in 1937 in Ferrara in 2-40:13 and placed seventh at the Paris marathon.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-38:40 (1933).
