Biography

Starting in 1945, György Telegdy was a basketball player for Goldberger, MEFESZ University of Technology, Budapest Haladás, and MAFC, winning national championships with all four clubs (1946, 1950-51, 1956). He also became a national champion in handball in 1949 with the UTE team. Between 1949 and 1952 Telegdy played for the Hungarian basketball team seven times, and in 1949 he was a member of the bronze medal team at the World College Games in Budapest. He took part at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 in basketball, where he played in five matches.

Telegdy qualified as a basketball coach while he was still playing and between 1952 and 1969 worked as a coach at Vasas Izzó. As a sports leader, he was also a member of the board of the Hungarian Basketball Association. In 1950 Telegdy obtained a degree in chemical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology. After that he worked at Egyesült Izzó and Tungsram in various positions, retiring in 1988 as production director.
