Biography

Fumi Kojima graduated from the women’s physical education department of Chukyo High School of (since 2010 Shigakkan University) together with Sadako Yamamoto. She later worked as a teacher at high schools in Saga and Kagoshima Prefectures. As an athlete she was active in shot put and discus throw. In 1934, she set a national record in the shot put with 10.84 metres. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics she competed in the discus throw but with little success. From 1934 until 1940 she won seven consecutive national titles in the shot put, and then came back after the war to win two more in 1947 and 1948. In addition, she took seven titles in the discus throw (1937-40, 1946-48). Her last international appearance was at the 1951 Asian Games, when she earned silver in both events.

After retiring from active sports, Kojima was an athletics coach in Kyushu and worked there as a sports journalist for the local Minami-Nippon Shimbun newspaper. Later she was appointed professor at the Aichi Prefectural Women’s Junior College and the Kagoshima Keizai University (now Kagoshima International University). Kojima also served as director of the Kagoshima Athletics Association.
