Biography

Seiko Obonai was a Japanese athlete who competed in the shot put and discus. Obonai won back-to-back shot put inter-school titles while at Fukuoka High School. She studied at Nihon University, becoming a three-time national champion, twice in the shot put (1960–61) and once in the discus (1960). In 1962 Obonai set a Japanese record in the shot put with a throw of 15.24 metres. It was the first throw by a Japanese woman to go past the 15 metre mark, with the record standing for nine years.

Obonai was a two-time champion in the shot put at the Asian Games, winning gold in 1958 and 1962. At the same two Asian Games she also won silver in the discus. Obonai competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the shot put but finished in a disappointing 15th place in the qualifying round with a best throw of only 13.70 metres.
