Biography

Tibor Zsíros joined the basketball team of the Szent László Gymnasium at the age of 13, played in the second division at the age of 16, and in the top division six months later. Zsíros won the championship with his first team BKV Előre in 1949, and then played basketball for Ganz-MÁVAG between 1950 and 1961. During his sports career in the Hungarian championship he won three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals.

Zsíros was selected for the national team 195 times. He played in three Olympics (1948, 1952, 1960) and four European Championships. He was a member of the national team that won the silver medal at the 1953 European Championship and the gold medal in 1955. He also played in the winning team at the 1954 World College Championship.

Zsíros is the only Hungarian basketball player to have played at three Olympics, and he went to the fourth in 1964 as a national team coach. After finishing his playing career he managed the Ganz-MÁVAG men’s team as a coach (between 1961-1963, then 1966-1977). His team won several championship silver medals and won the Hungarian Cup in 1975. He managed the preparation of the men’s national team between 1964-1966 and 1978-1979. In 1975 he was awarded the title of master coach. In 2005 he was elected to the Immortals of Hungarian Basketball as both a player and a coach.
