Biography

Norwegian track and field athlete Oscar Midtlyng competed in the high jump in the 1920s. In 1928 Midtlyng was selected to participate in the event at the Amsterdam Olympics where he placed 19th. He had better success the following year when he became the Norwegian high jump champion. In 1930 he emigrated to the United States where he started a family. He had plans to represent Norway at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics but was ruled out of selection after suffering an Achilles injury. Towards the end of his life Midtlyng wished to return to Norway to watch the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics but he was terminally ill with leukaemia and died that October.
