Biography

Swiss sportsman Luigi Antognini competed in gymnastics and athletics at both the national and international level, winning multiple titles in Ticino. Antognini competed in the shot put at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics but finished a disappointing 19th place out of the 20 athletes that took part. He was also the flag bearer for Switzerland at the Opening Ceremony of the Games.

Antognini retired from athletics in 1923 and moved to San Francisco where he earned plenty of money as a wrestler. After the end of World War II he returned to Ticino where he founded the Unione Sportiva Ascona sports club and a local newspaper, and was involved in the construction of a local lido and golf course. Antognini later dabbled in politics, sitting in the Grand Council of Ticino.

Personal Best: SP – 10.66 (1921).
