Biography

Justin Arop first became noticed internationally as a javelin thrower when he won the 1976 East and Central African Championship as an 18-year-old. He won that title again in 1977, 1981-82, 1985, 1989, and 1990. Arop also won the All-Africa Games in 1978 and 1987 and the African Championships in 1985 and 1988. His major invitational title came at the 1982 Lite Summer Games in Durham, North Carolina, USA, setting a Ugandan record of 84.58 metres. He was Ugandan Champion in 1981, 1984-87, and 1990-91, also winning the national title in the shot put in 1982, 1985, and 1986. Arop competed at three Olympic Games (1980, 1984, 1988), the 1987 World Championships, and the 1990 Commonwealth Games. In 2006 the annual Arop Memorial Championships were held in Gulu in northern Uganda, in his memory.
