Biography

Penny Neer attended the University of Michigan where she played on the basketball and softball teams, and was a weight thrower on the track team. Neer won the 1982 AIAW discus throw title, and was Big 10 Conference champion in the discus in 1980-82. She was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2002. Neer became a discus thrower when her mother encouraged to try the event because of her big hands.

Neer was on the podium five times at the USA Championships, with a second place finish in 1985. She also won a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. She made the 1992 Olympic team by placing third at the trials. Neer later became an MRP (material requirement planning) Analyst/Scheduler for Venture Industries, and then became a playwright and author of short stories.

Personal Best: DT – 62.10 (1987).
