Biography

Mike Barnett was a javelin thrower who finished seventh at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Barnett was the 1980 Pan American Junior Champion, and also won a silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games. Barnett attended Azusa Pacific University where he won five NAIA Championships in the early 1980s. After his competitive career ended he moved into coaching at his alma mater, leading the women’s team to seven NAIA Championships. In 2013 he became director of track & field at his alma mater. Barnett’s most famous pupil as a coach was Bryan Clay, the 2008 Olympic decathlon champion. In 1993 Barnett was inducted into the Azusa Pacific Hall of Fame.
