Biography
A javelin thrower at the University of Kansas, Sam Colson won the 1975 Pan American Games gold medal. He was NCAA champion in 1973, after finishing third in 1972, and was AAU champion in 1974. Colson finished third at the AAU Meet in the javelin in 1971 and 1975. Colson was the #1 ranked American javelin thrower in 1974 and 1976, and was ranked in the US top 10 for seven straight years, 1970-76. He was world ranked three times, in 1973-74 and 1976, with a high ranking of #6 in 1974.
Colson later became a strength and conditioning coach at Clemson University. In 1985 he was indicted in a steroid scandal, and pled guilty to providing prescription drugs, including steroids, to student athletes at Clemson. He was fined, placed on probation, and ordered to perform community service.
