Biography

Norwood Hallowell won the AAU 1,500 in 1932 and the IC4A mile in 1931. He competed for Harvard after prepping at Milton Academy, and later spent time at Balliol College at Oxford. In World War II Hallowell was a member of the US Naval Reserve and was an executive officer on two ships. He later became an English teacher at Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts.

Hallowell’s grandfather, the first Norwood Penrose Hallowell, was an ardent abolitionist in the mid-1800s and became a Civil War hero fighting for the North, distinguishing himself at Antietam. He as promoted to lieutenant-colonel and led an All-Black regiment for the Union forces.
