Biography

Russell Payne won the AAU steeplechase in 1925. He was also second in that event in 1924 and 1926 and third in 1923, and he finished second in the AAU 10K in 1927. He ran for Ohio State and the Illinois AC. In 1924 Payne finished second in the 2-mile run at the Big 10 Conference Meet. He continued running through 1928 but retired after he failed to make the 1928 US Olympic Team.

Personal Best: Steeplechase – 9:47.1 (1924).
