Reggie Pearman

Reggie Pearman, the son of Bermudan immigrants, ran for New York University and the New York Pioneer Club. At NYU he won seven national and major collegiate titles in distances from 440-1,000 yards, but he was mostly known as the anchor runner on their relay teams, often starring at the Penn Relays. In August 1952, competing for the USA in internationals against the British Empire and a tri-meet against Jamaica and Great Britain, Reggie Pearman ran on world record setting relay teams. Against the British Empire, he was on a 4×880 y relay team, while against Jamaica/Britain he helped the US set a world record in the 4×400 relay. Pearman was AAU champion in 1957 at 440 y and in 1947 and 1952 in the 800 m/880 y. Indoors he won the AAU 600 y in 1954. At the NCAAs he was sixth in the 1947 440 y and runner-up in the 1949 880 y.

After retiring from running in 1957 he joined the Peace Corps a few years later, and later worked for the US Office of Education, moving to the highest non-political position, branch chief. He also served his country in the Army, fighting in the Philippines in World War II and also in the Korean Conflict. Pearman later returned to college and earned a doctorate in educational administration at the University of Massachusetts, and later taught graduate and doctoral students in education at Cornell and Cal State.
