Biography

Hilda Wallis played all three events at the 1924 Olympics, reaching the quarter-final of the mixed doubles. In Ireland Wallis won the singles championship four times, in 1924, 1926, 1930, and 1933. She was Irish Champion in doubles in 1926, 1930-31, 1933, and 1935, and won the Irish mixed doubles title in 1924, 1931, and 1933. Wallis was County Wicklow Champion 11 times, winning in 1921-29 and 1931-32. She twice played at Wimbledon, in 1924 and 1936, reaching the third round in singles in 1936. In Ireland, she was ranked #1 in 1933, #2 in 1932 and 1936, and #4 in 1935.

Wallis never married. She was also a hockey international and a low-handicap golfer. She was well known as a musician and won several distinctions for soprano at the Feis Ceoil (music festivals). Her family was also well known in sports and music, with one brother, Tommy, playing rugby for Ireland, while another brother, Stuart, was a solid tennis player, and her sister, Phyllis, was a good tennis player and violinist.
